From 2016 – 2019 Sean Cooney served as worldwide Head of Post Production and Creative Content Operations at Netflix. Here, he was part of a core leadership team charged with a ground-floor studio building effort to support the largest content production slate in the history of Hollywood. Cooney grew and led the Post team from a staff of six to the most deeply resourced and talented team of its’ kind. Team oversight spanned 5 content verticals: Series, Film, Documentaries, Unscripted & Talk, Kids & Family and International. The group included Post Production, Media Operations & Creative Services, Dubbing, Systems & Innovation and Vendor management. Along the way, the org became global, establishing teams across EMEA, Asia, Spain and Latin America. This group, which is still growing and has evolved into multiple orgs, now oversees hundreds of branded original shows annually – delivered to an audience of millions of global subscribers.

Prior to Netflix, Sean was Head of Post Production at Legendary Entertainment, overseeing all aspects of Post Production – budgeting, staffing and delivering content ranging from major $100M+ tentpole feature films such as Duncan Jones’ “Warcraft,” Zhang Yimou’s “The Great Wall,” Jordan Vogt Roberts’ “Kong: Skull
Island,” Steven DeKnight’s “Pacific Rim 2”.

In a pivotal role at a time when the entertainment industry was evolving from film capture to digital, Cooney led a team at Warner Bros. as SVP Advanced Production & Post Technology. The team was responsible for optimizing production and post technology pipelines and workflow feature films such as David Ayers’ “Suicide Squad,” Zach Snyder’s “Batman vs. Superman,” David Yates’ “The Legend of Tarzan,” Glenn Ficarra & John Requa’s “Focus,” and New Line’s “San Andreas.” At Warner Bros., Cooney led a number of industry-wide R&D efforts such as the 2011 Workflow study – which evaluated 40 production technology vendors and was presented at the Hollywood Post Alliance, American Society of Cinematographers and SMPTE.

As the Vice President of Feature Post Production for Miramax Films, based in NYC, Cooney oversaw post production on original feature films and acquisitions such as “The Queen,” with Helen Mirren in an Academy Award-winning role; “Doubt,” featuring Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman; “Diving Bell & the Butterfly” directed by Julian Schnabel; “Everybody’s Fine,” starring Robert DeNiro; and “The Debt” with Helen Mirren and Sam Worthington, and “Adventureland,” starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart.

In the early 2000’s, Cooney was Manager, Distribution & Operations for Showtime, where he oversaw post production, delivery and worldwide servicing of over 100 television shows, documentaries and movies and was instrumental in negotiating pioneering deals between networks such as Showtime and future streamers such as Netflix and Apple.

Before Showtime, Cooney worked at the independent film studio of Roger and Julie Corman, which was known as a launching ground for industry leaders such as Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese and James Cameron. The company produced 25-30 films per year and managed a library of 400 titles that were actively distributed worldwide. As Director of Development, Cooney optioned and developed manuscripts and screenplays as well as structured finance and talent deals for the studio. As Production Manager and Post Production Supervisor, he negotiated hundreds of deals on productions across Los Angeles, India, the Philippines and Egypt. He also advised on overall strategy for post production operations and film library archives.

Cooney is a member of the Television Academy, the Hollywood Professional Association (HPA), and the Entertainment Technology Council (ETC). He holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master of Fine Arts in Film & Television from the University of California, Los Angeles.
